Two elephants from a circus in South Africa are going to strike their own gold coins.

Forming part of the 2008 Natura coin range, the elephants have grown up as part of the Brian Boswell Circus family.

Circus owner Brian Boswell reportedly saved ten elephant calves from being culled in 1983 and the new coins mark the event.

According to South African Mint deputy general manager Natanya van Niekerk, the elephants made history by striking a coin that celebrates the species.

"We will make world history by having an African elephant literally striking a coin, celebrating its own species," he stated.

Struck at the Westgate shopping centre in Johannesburg, the coins feature African elephants and are a response to plans to re-introduce elephant culling in South Africa.

Meanwhile, the 2008 American Eagle Gold Proof Set is now available from the US Mint, each containing a one ounce, half ounce, quarter ounce, and a 1/10th ounce proof coin.
