Friday, 14th November 2008 (2253 views) A metal detector enthusiast in the Netherlands has unearthed a haul of gold and silver coins in Maastricht.The cache, which includes 39 gold coins thought to have been minted by a local tribe the Eburones, dates to around the mid first century BC. Located this spring in a Dutch cornfield in the south of the country, the Associated Press reports that the ancient Celtic and Germanic coins have been examined by experts. During the middle of the first century BC Julius Caesar was leading military campaigns in the area that is now the Netherlands. Amsterdam's Free University has conducted an archaeological investigation of the Maastricht site following the discovery by Paul Curfs. An exhibition at Kunsthal Rotterdam in the Netherlands is showcasing the wealth of imperial Rome, including gold jewellery and coins.
