A metal detector enthusiast has unearthed a gold sheet dating back around 300 years in a field in west Norfolk.

Stephen Brown unearthed the fragment of gold sheet in a farmer's field, according to the Lynn News.

Experts have estimated that the gold sheet is more than 300-years-old and it has been declared treasure trove by a local coroner.

At an inquest held by greater Norfolk district coroner Jacqueline Lake at Lynn County Court, a series of Bronze Age objects also found by Mr Brown were declared treasure trove.

A heavy gold ring thought to be 900-years-old and possibly owned by Robert, the eldest son of William the Conquerer, was recently found by Peter Beasley, 67, using a metal detector near Petersfield, Hampshire.

Mr Beasley told the Portsmouth News that he believes the ring was owned by royalty and is engraved with Robert's name and he is now determined to prove that it is genuine.
