Gold quarter eagle coins 'offer insight' into San Francisco historyThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Tuesday, 9th September 2008 (4502 views) A collection of gold coins gives a "fascinating view" of the history of the San Francisco Mint, it has been claimed. The Coronet Head quarter eagle pieces can help enthusiasts to gain an insight into the early days of Californian gold production, writes Paul Green on the Numismaster website. A minting facility was needed in the region after gold was found in Sutter's Mill on the American River in 1848, the article states. This discovery would go on to have an important impact on the future of California and US gold output, it said. The San Francisco mint opened in 1854, producing only gold coins. The gold dollar had a mintage of around 200,000 pieces but the quarter eagle had a much smaller production of 300 - making it much tougher to obtain in modern times. In August of this year, the US Mint temporarily ran out of one-ounce American Eagle gold coins due to high demand.
