Friday, 5th September 2008 (1478 views) An exhibit featuring gold artifacts is now open to the public after being delayed by the onset of hurricane Gustav.The Baldwin County Heritage Museum is displaying treasures from the shipwreck of the SS Republic, reported the Pensacola News Journal. A sample from the 51,000 gold coins found on the vessel will be shown in the event held in Elberta, Alabama. Education director Becky Holliday commented: "Visitors will get to relive the life of the SS Republic, including the ship's Civil War heroics at the Battle of Mobile Bay through the use of interactive exhibits." The wreck of the steamship was discovered in August 2003 by a marine crew from Tampa. It sank in a hurricane off the Georgia coast in 1865 along with its cargo of gold. Meanwhile, archaeologists searching the Danube river believe they may have found a ship that carried Queen Mary of Hungary and a haul of gold jewellery, according to All Hungary News.
