A gold ring has been given to a naval museum after being found at sea, it has been reported.

Divers Bob Hamilton and Peter Brady found the engagement ring off the coast of Orkney, Scotland, according to the Press.

It was traced to a retired brigadier, 79-year-old Malcolm Cubiss - nephew of Ernest Stanley Cubiss, the original owner.

He donated the heirloom to the Orkney Museum.

The divers found the item while exploring the wreck of the HMS Opal. It was inscribed with the words “To Stanley from Flo, March 1916.”

"[When] they mentioned the Opal I knew what they were talking about, because I knew my uncle had died on that ship," Mr Cubiss told the news provider.

A recent salvage operation on the river Thames in London discovered seven shipwrecks thought to be up to 350 years old - including a second world war gunboat and a warship that was blown up in 1665.
