Restoration of a historic gold mine in Wyoming is beginning to make progress, it has been reported.

Work on the Carissa site in South Pass City should be completed in the next few years, according to the Casper Star-Tribune.

Spokesman Joe Ellis told the paper that the project aims to show people what it was really like in the 1930s.

"That's our goal ... to develop a walking path and basically allow people to follow the ore," he added.

The town was formed during a gold rush in 1967, with the Carissa mine going on to become the main economic support for the community, the news provided said.

Over 20 restored buildings are located in the area, which also has a gold mining interpretive centre where staff in costume demonstrate gold panning techniques.

Other authentic structures include a saloon, jail and school. It is located off highway 28 in Wyoming.
