Bahrain has honoured one of its olympic heroes by rewarding him with commemorative gold coin, it has been reported.

The Bahrain International Circuit (BIC), which sponsors the country's team, gave Rasheed Ramzi the coin engraved with its corporate logo, according to the Bahrain News Agency.

Mr Ramzi won gold at the 1500 metre race with a time of 3.32.94 and dedicated his victory to the BIC, the news provider said.

It added that officials had expressed their delight at seeing "a heightened level of competition from the kingdom." They also said that it was "exciting to be part of national history".

It was the country's first ever gold medal.

The Kingdom came 52nd out of 204 countries that participated at the Olympics - out of the Arab countries it shared joint first with Tunisia, as stated by the Gulf Daily News.
