Monday, 1st September 2008 (1641 views) The first euro coin - with a face value of 50 - has been released by the Central Bank of Malta in gold.Released under the Europa Programme 2008, which has a theme of cultural heritage, the coin shows the porch of the Auberge de Castille on one side, while the other has the emblem of Malta and the year of production on it. The coin design is the first to be produced in the euro denomination with a Maltese representation. Such coins are to produced at the Dutch Mint. Production of the gold version of the coin will be limited to a run of 3,000 and is available for sale to collectors at a price of 185 (£150), the newspaper reports. Such coins also feature the Europa star, which is the official logo of the Cultural Heritage programme under which the coins have been produced. Malta, along with Cyprus and 13 other countries began using the euro at the start of the year, the BBC reports.
