The Central Bank in Malta has announced the release of a limited edition gold collector's coin, reports the Times of Malta.

The €50 gold coin will be the first euro issued with the Auberge de Castille as its theme on one side.

On the reserve will be emblem of Malta and the Europa Star which is the logo for the Europa Programme 2008.

At a retail price of €185 (£147), only 3,000 of the gold euro coin have been minted by the Royal Dutch Mint.

During the Tour of Great Britain in 1948, the cricketer led the test team which never lost a match and Australian prime minister John Howard called him the "greatest living Australian", according to Kerala Online.

He died aged 92 in 2001 with a Test batting average of 99.94.
