Dealers to supply American Eagles for US mint

Tuesday, 26th August 2008 (387 views)

In order to cope with demand, the US Mint has said it will allocate American Eagle gold coins among dealers, reports Reuters.

The mint has also said it has started to take orders for coins again on Monday this week.

Sales were temporarily suspended last week due to demand outstripping supply.

In a memo released late last week, the US Mint told its authorised dealers: "The unprecedented demand for American Eagle gold one-ounce bullion coins necessitates our allocating these coins among the authorized purchasers on a weekly basis until we are able to meet demand."

According to the mint, the American Eagle inventory will be divided up equally among authorised dealers.

The coins were introduced in 1986 and have proved popular among gold coin collectors, Reuters said.

Meanwhile, on NumisMaster, F Michael Fazzari has warned coin collectors to be careful of purchasing counterfeited $3 gold pieces, especially from the years 1854, 1855, 1857, 1974, 1878 and 1882.
