A commemorative gold coin has been launched at South Africa's Vredefort Dome according to a source.

The Dome, which is located in the Free State and became a world heritage site in 2005, was yesterday the venue for the minting of a new line of R2 gold coins.

As well as the coins a 24-carat gold medallion was also produced at the site, which is the world's oldest and deepest meteor impact crater, reports Sabcnews.com.

The coins and medallion form a special limited edition set of 300.

Seven South African heritage areas have been chosen to commemorated in this way, with the Dome being the penultimate example, the source states.

The site, which is around 120 km from Johannesburg, dates back 2,023 million years and has a radius of 190 km, claims whc.unesco.org.

It also provides valuable information into the evolution of geological history of the planet, the website adds.
