A vintage Indian coin has been sold for more than £2,700.

The one rupee went for 220,000 rupees when it was auctioned in Bangalore on Sunday.

Farkh Todywalla, auctioneer for the sale, called the 1960 coin the "rarest of the rare" and revealed it never went into circulation as it did not receive approval from officials.

He told Yahoo: "Considering its rarity, we were expecting a record prize, that's why the cut-off price for bids was fixed at 200,000 rupees."

A ten rupee gold coin was also sold at the auction, which is a three-day event, a source reports.

The British era item, complete with Queen Victoria etching, made 160,000 rupees, reports the Khaleej Times.

Gold coins and bank notes were also on offer, with some dating back as far as 200 BC.

As part of the auction a 50-rupee note was sold for a record fee of 605,000 rupees.
