US Mint uses FreeFrom to design coinsWednesday, 13th August 2008 (475 views) A technology company has announced the US Mint used its FreeForm 3D modelling to design coins.Designers at the mint have used the system from SensAble Technologies to design and engrave both collectables and coins which are in regular circulation. SensAble Techologies said coin designers used its technology to "incorporate classical artistry and textural refinement in their engravings". Among the coins created with FreeForm has been the Louisa Adams $10 gold coin. This coin is part of the First Spouse gold coin series featuring an image of Mrs Adams and her son in front of arches, symbolising their journey to Paris when they joined husband John Quincy Adams. In addition, the creators made the San Francisco Old Mint $5 gold coin with an image of the old mint, copying an 1869 construction drawing of the building. Mrs Adams was the first lady of the United States between 1825 and 1829. She married the future president in 1797.
