Tuesday, 12th August 2008 (1931 views) The South African Mint has announced the Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site is to be imprinted on a R2 gold commemorative coin, reports SABC News.Vredefort Dome will become one of several World Heritage sites to appear on a series of gold coins. The actual striking of the coin will take place during the International Large Meteorite Impacts and Planetary Evolution IV Conference to be held on August 17th at the crater. Spokesperson for the South Africa Mint's marketing department, Sandy de Kock, said: "This huge conference seemed to be an ideal place and opportunity to strike the coin." The Vredefort Dome is believed to have come into existence 2,020 million years after a meteorite crashed into the earth. It is 300 km wide and many kilometres deep. It became a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2005 and is the largest verified crater in the world. Other sites include the Sydney Opera House, the Great Wall of China and the Piazza del Duomo in Pisa.
