National coin exhibition takes place in IndiaThursday, 7th August 2008 (622 views) A national numismatic exhibition recently took place in Coimbatore, southern India, reports Thaindian News.Over 50 people from across the country took part in the event which featured coins dating back to the first century BC. Nityanandan, an avid coin collector, displayed some of his collection at the show. He said: "Some of the coins belong to the first century BC and cost 3,000 rupees (£36.68). "I also displayed coins of the British East India Company ... and a Pagoda gold coin valued at rupees 15,000." As many coins were bought by visitors, Nityanandan said buying gold coins is like making an investment for the future. He recommended that children start collecting coins as a hobby. Creator of the display, Palaniswamy, said this was the 45th time the show had been held and he hoped it would create awareness among children about the ancient history of India.
