Tuesday, 5th August 2008 (1738 views) A total of $20,189,907 (£10,327,117) was raised in a recent rare coin auction held by Stack's in Baltimore, reports Numismatic News.A $2.50 gold piece dating back to 1796 sold for a winning bid of $488,750. The coin is apparently one of the finest known and is the only gold coin from the era of any denomination which does not have any stars. The biggest sale of the day went to the Norweb 1797 half dollar which was graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation as an Ultra Gem MS-66. It sold for $1,389,000. Cataloguers at the event said the Norweb 1797 was "certain to be a highlight not only of our Baltimore Auction, but also of American numismatic sales of the entire year". Stack's describes itself as home to a team of rare coin professionals. Is a fourth-generation family owned business which specialises in auctioning coins - world, ancient and US - along with medals and tokens.
