Canada issues gold coins to celebrate mint's centenaryThursday, 5th June 2008 (828 views) The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) has released a new range of coins and stamps including a series of five-ounce gold pieces to celebrate the 100th anniversary of its first coin strike. The company's president and chief executive Ian E Bennett said each one of the commemorative coins is designed to "express a theme or ideal that reflects Canada's heritage and values". Production of the five-ounce gold coins will be "strictly limited" to 250 pieces, the mint said, with each one having a face value of C$500 (£251). Boasting "exquisite craftsmanship and finish", each of the coins will be available for C$8,159.95, the organisation added. Domestic coin production started at the Royal Canadian Mint on January 2nd 1908 when then-governor general Albert Henry George Grey, better known as the fourth Earl Grey, used the company's press to strike a 50 cents piece. Since then, the Royal Canadian Mint's activities have expanded to incorporate the production coins for circulation in both Canada and abroad, the manufacture of gold bullion items, assaying and refinery services.
