Edible gold flakes or sprinkles can make "any dessert, drink or dish look like a million bucks", it has been claimed.

The Rocky Mountain News states that amateur and professional chefs looking to give their dishes extra dazzle can now buy gold leaf in "easy-to-use, easy-to-control shakers" from companies such as Easy Leaf Products.

To add extra sparkle to their culinary creations, they can also add olive oil flecked with 23ct gold, the newspaper adds.

Edible gold has been used as an ingredient in a variety of dishes and desserts, including a collection of premium chocolates by New York pastry chef Ellen Mirsky, a $1,000 (£500) ice cream sundae and the £35,000 Flawless cocktail, which also features Louis XVII cognac, Cristal Rose champagne and an 11ct diamond ring.

Gold flakes imported from Japan were also recently used in a $175 hamburger from the Wall Street Burger Shoppe in Manhattan, Gothamist.com reported recently.
