17th century gold to go under hammerWednesday, 4th June 2008 (791 views) Gold coins from the 17th century that were discovered last year are set to go under the hammer as part of the annual "garden party" auction by Philippe Rouillac.Every year, the auctioneer hosts the event at Chateau de Cheverny in the Loire valley - a 17th century estate - and this year a number of very special lots will once more be available to bidders, reports the Art Info website. The 250 French gold coins were discovered in Montrichard, south of Vendome, by a 22-year-old Portuguese mason. They are expected to be sold for between 100,000 and 200,000 (£79,000 to £158,000). Other lots include coded letters from Louis XV, which are expected to sell for between 3,000 and 5,000 each, as well as swords and sabres from the late 18th century, which could reach around 150,000 each. The auction venue itself has a rich history and has been in the possession of the Hurault family for more than 600 years.
