Gold leaf features in wedding cake designer's "edible art"The news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Tuesday, 3rd June 2008 (3747 views) Gold leaf is among the ingredients used by a specialist cake designer whose culinary creations have been described as "edible art".The Houston Chronicle states that Lisa Green uses the gold leaf to paint inlays on some of her cakes, which also feature fondant pearls, "intricate lace patterns" made from sugar and icing tinted to match the bride's dress for wedding cakes. Ms Green told the newspaper it can take up to 30 hours worth of work to plan, design and make one of her wedding cakes - which fetch prices of up to $17 (£8.66) a slice. The self-taught baker can reproduce custom patterns, such as china, or items such as invitations or the bride's veil for her confections. She has also made birthday and anniversary cakes to resemble Elvis Presley's blue suede shoes, rhinestone stilettos, castles, clam shells, golf bags and a martini glass. Gold leaf is created by beating the precious metal into a thin sheet, which can then be applied as gilding or decoration for food, art and sculptures. Most gold leaf is 23ct.
