Robbers steal gold worth thousands - but leave rare coin behind

Wednesday, 21st May 2008 (613 views)

Gold coins worth about $200,000 (£100,000) were stolen by thieves who cut a hole in the roof of a US rare coin dealership.

The alarm of Ron Swiney's Rare Coin Shop in Benbrook, Texas, was not activated during the theft and the culprits left via an exit door, dropping a rare 1893 gold coin worth $35,000 as they went.

Mr Swiney was not covered by insurance, saying the cost was prohibitive and his safe cost him $10,000; he is offering $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the thieves.

In the haul were several other coins and pieces of gold jewellery, according to Kvue Television.

"Obviously we want to look at other cities and similar types of offences to see if we can come up with any type of information," said Lieutenant Mike Ford of the Benbrook police.

Benbrook is twinned with the town of Ballymoney in Northern Ireland.
