Workshop to highlight importance of gold hallmarkingTuesday, 20th May 2008 (1251 views) A new workshop will be held this week in India to highlight the importance of hallmarking gold jewellery following a decision by the country's government to make the practice compulsory, it has been reported.Fibre2fashion.com says the class has been organised by the Manipal Institute of Jewellery Management (MIJM) in conjunction with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). It is part of the MIJM's programme to promote BIS hallmarking among jewellers, designers and retailers, as well as customers in what is the world's largest consumer of gold. Contributors to the workshop, which will be held on May 22nd, will include the deputy vice-chancellor of Manipal University SS Pabla and G Jaya Archarya of the Udupi Jewellers Association. The event will be chaired by Dr G K Prabu, the registrar of Manipan University. Hallmarking is one of the oldest forms of consumer protection ever recorded. It refers to a series of symbols punched into precious metals to confirm their purity and weight. Traditionally, hallmarks were administered by so-called guardians of the craft but have in modern times become the responsibility of national assay offices.
