Gold Nugget Days melodrama wows ParadiseThursday, 1st May 2008 (414 views) Theatre-goers in Paradise, California, have been treated to a "pure gold" production of a 19th century melodrama as part of the 2008 Gold Nugget Days festival, it has been reported. The Chico Enterprise Record states the show - entitled Uproarious Perils in Pair O'Dice - was presented by the town's Gold Nugget museum and the Paradise Performing Arts Centre as part of the 50th anniversary of the Gold Nugget Days festival. In true melodrama fashion, the newspaper says, the production featured characters such as a long-suffering heroine, a noble hero and a "mean-tempered, money-hungry villain". Audience members were also encouraged to boo and jeer the bad guys and cheer the good characters - something they took to with "spirited enthusiasm", it adds. A cast and crew of over 100 brought the melodrama to life, with musical interludes, fast-paced one-liners and "a world of puns". The annual Gold Nugget Days festival commemorates the 1859 discovery of a 54-pound gold nugget, the largest ever found in North America, in Feather River Canyon by miner Chauncey Wright.
