A second opencast gold mining operation could be up and running in the African country of Namibia "within the next 18 months", according to reports.

Allafrica.com states that the country's mines minister Erkki Nghimtina said a feasibility study is currently being planned to determine whether a mine could be developed between Otavi and Otjiwarongo in the country.

Production at the mine could start by as early as 2010, the minister reportedly added.

During the last financial year, Mr Nghimtina noted, Namibia has attracted the highest level of spending on mineral exploration since it gained independence 18 years ago.

Some N$500 million (£33.52 million) has come into the country's mining and exploration sector during this period, he added.

Namibia is a republic located on the Atlantic coast of south-west Africa. The country is bordered by Angola, Zambia, Botswana and South Africa, whom it gained its independence from in 1990.
