A 24ct gold version of the Apple MacBook Air, which the company claims is the thinnest notebook computer in the world, has been launched, according to reports.

According to consumer news site Tech Digest, the gold MacBook Air also features the "old school" Apple rainbow logo on its top made from sapphires that light up when the computer is in use.

The ultra-slim notebook, which measures 0.76 inches at its thickest point, also has the same operating capacity as other MacBook Airs, with a 1.6GHz processor and an 80GB hard drive.

The 24ct gold MacBook Air is available for around $8,000 (£4,000), the site states.

Apple chief executive Steve Jobs launched the MacBook Air at the Macworld Conference and Expo in January 2008.

The product's launch was followed up with a distinctive advertising campaign, which featured a hand opening a manila envelope to reveal the ultra-thin MacBook Air inside.
