12-ounce gold coin to go under the hammerThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Monday, 21st April 2008 (1738 views) A 12-ounce gold coin struck in 1999 to honour the Polish composer Fryderyk Chopin is among the items up for sale in a new auction of rare gold coins from the eastern European state, it has been reported.According to polishnews.com, the coin - which is worth one million Polish zlotych (£233,720) - joins another gold item in the sale, a piece worth 50 ducat, a trade currency used in many parts of Europe prior to World War I. Other lots going up for auction include the first coin ever struck in Poland, dating from the reign of Mieszko I of the Piast dynasty (960 to 992) and a presentation coin minted to commemorate the nation's 17th century victory over the Ottoman Empire at the Battle of Chocim. The sale is being organised in Chicago, Illinois by auction house Stack's. The news site says bidding is expected to be "intense" as, alongside Russian currency, Polish coins are currently the most popular items among worldwide collectors. A recent sale at Stack's set a new world record price for a non-US coin when a 1621 gold Polish 100 ducat sold for $1.38 million (£686,565), it adds.
