Friday, 18th April 2008 (1561 views) Shipwrecked gold and mint-condition Liberty gold $10 (£5) coins are among the lots set to go under the hammer at an auction of rare American currency, according to reports.Numismatic News states that a total of 125 items will be on the block at the event, entitled the Roadrunner Collection of Rare US Coins and Currency. Liberty - or Type I - dollars were minted in New Orleans and San Francisco between 1849 and 1854. The coins were made of 90 per cent pure gold and at the height of their production in 1853, over four million were struck. Among the other items on offer are no motto $20 gold coins, California fractional gold and patterned and high-grade Morgan and Peace dollars. Paper currency in the auction includes a $10,000 Gold Certificate from 1882 and a 1934 series $10,000 Federal Reserve note. The items will all be auctioned by Superior Galleries over May 26th and 27th, the site says.
