Thursday, 17th April 2008 (3080 views) "Large scale, mechanised" commercial gold mining will start in the Mubende district of central Uganda later this year, a government official has reportedly said.According to news site allafrica.com, the official from Uganda's ministry of energy and mineral development told a parliamentary committee that work will get underway on the project in October 2008. It will be located in Kamalenge, which is in the Kassanda county of Mubende. The site reports that according to the official, this will be the first large-scale gold operation ever undertaken in central Uganda's Buganda region. Uganda's government is also believed to be exploring possible gold targets in the area around Kisita, near Kamalenge. Large-scale mining is already carried out in Tira, in the west of the country, while smaller operations are underway at Buhweju and Kaabong in the east. Uganda is situated in east Africa on the northern shore of Lake Victoria. The country shares its borders with Sudan, DR Congo, Tanzania, Kenya and Rwanda.
