Gold recovered after "King Midas" theftWednesday, 12th March 2008 (1445 views) A bank employee in Taiwan is facing criminal charges after it was discovered he had stolen gold from numerous safety deposit boxes. The China Post reports that Chao Kuo-chiang, a safety deposit box custodian, managed to steal the assets from nine customers after copying keys and falsely filing paperwork. The 50-year-old's crimes were found out after a client reported that 66oz of gold were missing from his deposit box. When he told the authorities, Chao was arrested and released on bail. But the newspaper stated that the story did not end there, for Chao visited the victim and promised to return the gold. However, it turned out he had filled the box with iron bars sprayed gold to look real, meaning the owner had to once again inform police. Following the discovery, it was discovered that seven other box-holders had been robbed, with losses totalling six million Taiwanese dollars (£97,115). It was said he must have thought he had the touch of "King Midas" - a character in Greek mythology for whom everything he touched turned into solid gold.
