General Metals has confirmed the start of its expanded drilling programme at the Independence mine located in Nevada's Battle Mountain gold district.

Previous drilling at the site had supported historical estimates of resources contained in the site's shallow targets, which include 235,000 ounces of gold.

A second stage of drilling for 2008 was therefore confirmed to test the continuity and extent of shallow mineralisation. This will cover a total depth of 10,000 feet. A further 25,000 to 35,000 feet will be drilled in the expanded programme to test new gold targets at the site.

Five potential new gold zones have been identified at Independence,. These include the East Fault zone, the Independence Extension, the West Side target, East Side target and Independent North.

General Metals president and chief executive Steve Parent said it was the initial drill results that gave the company's management the confidence to make a "major financial commitment" to the expanded programme.

Production at the Independence mine continued intermittently between 1938 and 1987. Historic production at the site total 11,029 ounces of gold.
