Gold coins mark 25 years of the quidTuesday, 4th March 2008 (2595 views) A limited-edition set of gold coins will be issued by the Royal Mint to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the introduction of the £1 coin, according to reports. The Associated Press says the set will feature 14 £1 coins made of 22ct gold. Each coin features one of the designs that have been issued on the pound since it entered circulation in 1983. Pound coins were issued to replace the £1 note, which was withdrawn at the end of 1984. However, pound notes continue to be issued in Scotland, Jersey and Guernsey. Coin sets will retail at £4,995 and the Royal Mint has limited their production to 150. A further 12,000 sets will be available to pay in increments, costing £49.90 for the first two coins and £59.90 for each subsequent pair of coins. The Royal Mint traces its roots back to Alfred the Great. It has been based at the Tower of London, Tower Hill and currently operates from Llantrisant, near Cardiff. In addition to producing coins for UK circulation, the Royal Mint also strikes currency for 100 other countries worldwide.
