New volume of gold coin guide published

Friday, 29th February 2008 (1352 views)

The 2008 release of the Insider's Guide to US Coin Values has been published.

In the book, author Scott A Travers has enlisted the help of experts he acknowledged as some of the most prestigious numismatic authorities in America to assign values to gold coins of various eras and designs.

Among them is Mike Fuljenz, the president of Universal Coin & Bullion who assisted Mr Travers in the valuation of eagle and double eagle coins. Mr Travers, who has also worked for the Wall Street Journal and Business Week, said his valuations "like the metal, glitter".

Eagle coins, which were originally given a $10 (£5) denomination, were minted in the United States between 1795 and 1933. One of the rarest Eagles on record, which was presented as a gift by President Andrew Jackson during a trip to Asia, was sold to a private collector for $5 million.

In 1849, the Double Eagle coin, which was initially worth $20, was introduced to coincide with the California gold rush. Today, one of the first two proofs of the coin is on show at the Smithsonian Institution museum in Washington DC.
