US gold coins were among the items that raised a total of over $1.33 million (£679,273) at an auction in St Louis, according to reports.

Numismatic News said the Midwest Winter Sale event, which was handled by auction company Scotsman, also featured 1,109 lots overall.

Among the top sellers was a gold 1925 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle coin. The piece, which originally had a value of $20, sold for $19,550.

The coin was introduced in 1907 with a design by US sculptor Augustus St Gaudens to replace the existing Liberty Head $20 coin. It was minted until 1933.

Another gold coin, a 1799 $10 with small stars, finished up at $14,375.

Other items that went under the hammer included a Morgan dollar from 1895 - which fetched $82,800 - and a National Bank note dating from 1902 issued by the First National Bank of Tombstone, Arizona. It sold for $58,075.
