Gown of gold coins unveiled in JapanThursday, 14th February 2008 (1557 views) Japan's largest bullion house, Tanaka Kikinzoku Jewellery, has reportedly unveiled a gown decorated with hundreds of gold coins worth around 30 million yen ($140,416).Reuters says the dress, which weighs 8 kg, was designed by students at Tokyo's Bunka Fashion College, where several of Japan's leading designers have learnt their trade. It features 325 coins that were originally issued by Australia to celebrate the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra. The fur-trimmed gown is part of a week-long display at Tanaka Kinkinzoku's store in the upmarket Ginza district of Tokyo. Also on display are two gents' jackets decorated with gold coins, which are worth a combined 127 million yen. Tanaka Kikinzoku spokeswoman Tomoko Ishibashi told Reuters that at 8 kg, the mermaid-like gown was "not exactly" created to float around in. "You might want to wear it when you have been invited to meet the emperor, such as to the annual garden party," she added. The bullion house said it did not intend to sell the dress, although it would listen to any serious offers. The Tanaka Kikinzoku Group produces coins and jewellery, as well as precious metal products for use in mobile phones, satellites and as catalysts to reduce car emissions.
