A 100 kilogram, 99999 pure gold coin valued at C$1 million (£509,915) has gone on display in the United Arab Emirates as part of a promotion by the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM), according to reports.

News service Al Bawaba said the coin, which was originally designed to promote the RCM's line of 99.999 per cent pure Gold Maple Leaf bullion coins, has officially been recognised as the largest gold coin in the world by Guinness World Records.

It was displayed at the Canadian Embassy in the capital, Abu Dhabi, as part of a Canada Day reception and will move on to go on show in Dubai.

The RCM hopes displaying the coin will help its efforts to increase its bullion business in the UAE, where it has minted coins for circulation since 1988.

The Royal Canadian Mint recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, having produced Canada's first domestic coin, a 50 cent piece, in Ottawa in 1908.
