Burundi looks to develop gold miningFriday, 8th February 2008 (2659 views) The government of Burundi has told the Mining Indaba conference that it wishes to actively promote foreign investment in mining for gold and other metals in the central African country, according to reports.According to Mining Weekly, Burundi's mining sector is currently underdeveloped and relatively small. However, speaking to delegates at the conference in Cape Town, Burundi's minister of water, energy and mines, Samuel Ndyiragije said the government is now giving the development of mining projects a high priority in a bid to boost the country's economy. He said foreign investors willing to bankroll exploration or mineral extraction would benefit from a number of facilities, as well as large deposits of gold, copper, platinum and tin. Burundi is also thought to have sizeable deposits of tungsten, uranium and nickel. Its other natural resources include peat, arable land, kaolin and limestone. A number of companies were already exploring the country's gold deposits, Mr Ndyiragije added. Burundi is located at the northern end of Lake Tanganyika - the largest freshwater lake in the world - and shares its borders Rwanada, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
