US drops to 4th in world gold productionTuesday, 5th February 2008 (1571 views) Domestic gold production declined by six per cent in the United States in 2007, leaving the country as the fourth-biggest gold producer in the world, according to new figures. The annual Mineral Commodities summary by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), says that a total of 240 million tonnes of gold was produced in the US last year, worth a total of $5.1 billion (£2.59 billion). Some 99 per cent of this was yielded at 30 mines, with much of the remainder coming from large placer mines in Alaska, lode mines and small placer operations in Nevada and other western states. A drop in production at Nevada mines accounted for most of the overall decline, although it was partially offset by a rise in production in Alaska. Despite the fall, Nevada remains the biggest gold producer in the Union, accounting for 80 per cent of US gold. Globally, the US is now the behind China, South Africa and Australia in the list of top gold producers, the survey said. According to Goldsheet, gold produced by the United States currently accounts for 10.4 per cent of global output.
