Rare gold coins to go on display in California

Tuesday, 5th February 2008 (1415 views)

A complete set of Type I Double Eagle gold coins worth over $5 million (£2.54 million) are among the exhibits confirmed for this year's Long Beach Coin, Stamp & Collectibles in California, according to reports.

The coins, which originally had a denomination of $20, were struck between 1850 and 1866 and are part of a collection owned by Monaco Rare Coin of Newport Beach, News Antique says.

They feature a Liberty head design, with a pressed eagle seal on the other side. They are known as Double Eagles because they are worth twice as much as the $10 Eagle, which was the highest denomination of coin prior to 1850.

Other exhibits lined up for this year's expo include a collection of early US silver dollars and The Old Time Dice-Hicks Cabinet, a set of rare Hard Times tokens, which were struck from copper as unofficial currency during economic unrest between 1833 and 1843.

In addition to exhibitions and 1,000 dealers buying and selling collectibles, the expo will also feature an education programme. The first seminar, which will look at collecting US gold coins, will be held on February 14th.
