Shipwreck exhibition to bring tale of doomed Republic to Detroit

Thursday, 31st January 2008 (1431 views)

An exhibition including artefacts from the SS Republic, a paddle steamer that sank in 1965 carrying a fortune in gold, is to open in Detroit, according to reports.

Shipwreck! Pirates & Treasure is a look at some famous historical shipwrecks and shipwreck exploration through hands-on exhibits, interactive games and a storm tunnel, which recreates hurricane conditions.

There will also be a full-size replica of a portion of the wreck of the Republic, the Detroit News reports, plus gold, silver and other artefacts recovered from the ship.

Over 51,000 gold and silver coins have been retrieved from the Republic since it was discovered off the coast of Georgia in 2003.

The exhibition will open on March 24th at the Detroit Science Centre and will run until September.

The show is the creation of deep-sea archaeology firm Odyssey Marine Exploration, which made headlines in June 2007 when it recovered 500,000 gold and silver coins weighing a total of 17 tons from newly discovered wreck called Black Swan.
