Iranian gold coins impress Turkish curatorThursday, 17th January 2008 (1598 views) A collection of Ottoman artefacts in Tehran, including a number of gold coins, have "astounded" a Turkish museum curator, according to the Tehran Times. The coins, which are on display at Malek Museum, are showcased alongside hand-painted pen cases depicting soldiers in the Battle of Chaldiran, Turkish books and documents in manuscript form, collections of carpets and wooden furniture, including chairs and tables. Ilber Ortayli, curator of the Topikapi Palace Museum in Istanbul, said some of the items on display were historically invaluable. The gold coins date from the Achaemenid and Qajar eras, the newspaper reported. Malek National Library and Museum was established in 1997 and features a Coins Hall, with items from both the pre-Islamic and Islamic periods. In addition, the museum features a stamp collection it claims is "unique to the Middle East", miniature paintings, 36,000 volumes of printed books and a number of portraits of historically important scientists and politicians.
