Ivy League university buys gold coinsWednesday, 16th January 2008 (1479 views) Princeton University has bought a selection of Greek coins in an attempt to position itself as the premier public repository of this item from the late Middle Ages.Alan Stahl, the institution's numismatic collection curator, told New Jersey Online of the purchase, which involves over 800 medieval Greek coins and was bought from a businessman in London. "A few dozen" gold coins are included in the collection and are considered to be among some of the most valuable pieces. One in particular depicts Dorino Gattilusio, who was the lord of Lesbos and Ainos between 1400 and 1449. This, the newspaper explained, imitates the gold ducat of Venice on which the lord is identified as the Duke of Mytilene kneeling, while the reverse side shows a figure of Christ. Princeton University's library contains a number of exhibitions in addition to 6.2 million books and 6.3 million microforms.
