A planned robbery which would have seen coins stolen from the Dahlonega Gold Museum has been foiled after an anonymous tip-off.

According to AccessNorthGa.com, the Lumpkin County sheriff's office in Georgia received a call on Christmas Eve explaining that a conspiracy to steal the items was in the works.

Prior to the phone call, an alleged co-conspirator had visited the museum and investigated the value of the coins.

Lumpkin Country sheriff Mark McClure said a notice was released to state the authorities' awareness of such a plot and the punishment that would be given should a crime be committed.

Mr McClure said in addition to the historical significance of the gold coins, they are also "very valuable".

"We take these treasures of our county very seriously," he added.

Lumpkin County is located in the northern region of Georgia.
