A series of new coins, including a $5 gold piece, have been released by the US Mint this week.

The new commemorative coins celebrate the 35th anniversary of the US Endangered Species Act and feature images of the bald eagle - a species said to have made a "remarkable comeback" since the legislation was passed.

Available until the end of 2008, the coins will be listed at a special pre-order rate until February 14th, the Daily News Journal in Murfreesboro, Tennessee reported.

They will feature images of bald eagles designed jointly by US Mint artists and engravers, as well as the American Eagle Federation (AEF).

"This is the first time in our country's history that the likeness of a specific famous Bald Eagle has appeared on legal tender United States coinage," said AEF founder and president Al Cecere.

Plans for the coins were made following the signing of the American Bald Eagle Recovery & National Emblem Commemorative Coin Act by president George Bush in 2004.

According to the US Mint, some 100,000 $5 gold coins will be produced for the collection.

Items have been available to order since January 15th.
