Auction begins for Salvation Army gold coinsMonday, 14th January 2008 (1532 views) A total of six gold coins donated to the Salvation Army over the Christmas season are up for auction in North Carolina, according to the Star newspaper.It is thought that the coins - which include three South African Kruggerands dated 1978, 1980 and 1981, as well as three one-quarter troy ounce Liberty gold pieces dated 1999 could fetch $3,000 in the auction, which is set to begin today with sealed bidding. Bidders can choose to bid on individual gold coins or a combination of the items until January 31st, with a winner to be announced on February 1st. "We hope it would put a substantial boost into our services to help people," said Salvation Army captain John Leidy. According to the organisation, all funds raised will be used to help social services in the region, including rent payments for the needy. Over the Christmas holidays, a number of gold coin donations were reported across the United States in support of the charity's annual Red Kettle campaign.
