Canadian gold coins reflect regional themesThursday, 10th January 2008 (1495 views) A series of gold coins are to be released by the Royal Canadian Mint this year to reflect regional themes across the country, it has emerged.The 200th anniversary of the first navigation of the Fraser River to reach the Pacific Ocean will be the subject of a 14-carat gold coin with a face value of $100. It will feature an image of famed Canadian explorer Simon Fraser. In addition, a 22-carat gold coin celebrating the link between humans and the land in Canada's agriculture trade will make up the newest addition to the mint's Historical Commerce series. The coin will depict a team of draft horses ploughing a field. A third limited-edition coin, with a face value of $300, will feature the official provincial coat of arms of Newfoundland and Labrador, which was originally designed in 1638. Some 1,000 of these coins will be minted, selling for an estimated C$1,541.95 (£777.77) each. This year, the Royal Canadian Mint, which is located on Sussex Drive in Ottawa, Ontario, is celebrating its 100th anniversary.
