A collection of gold artefacts features prominently in the travelling museum exhibit Hidden Afghanistan, which is presently displaying at De Nieuwe Kerk in Amesterdam, Time magazine has reported.

Items displayed in the collection, which is from Tillya-Tepe, include a crown, bracelets and hearts, as well as a pair of shoe soles crafted from gold which are thought to have been worn by an aristocrat and signify a disinclination for walking.

Restoration work on the items began following the overthrow of Taliban rule in Afghanistan in 2003 and curators at the country's National Museum - where the treasures were held - currently believe the artefacts are safer travelling abroad.

The exhibit claims to feature around 250 "spectacular archaeological finds" which showcase the diversity of cultures in central Asia.

Before being displayed in Amsterdam, the exhibit was showcased in Paris, France and Turin, Italy. It is expected to run at De Niewe Kerk until April 20th 2008, after which it will arrive in the US for a four-city tour beginning in Washington DC.
