Further study of Ahom coins, many of which were struck in gold, could provide valuable insight into India's history, according to a research officer at the Indian Institute of Research in Numismatics.

Danish Moin told the Assam Tribune that Ahom coins are one of the least-studied money groups dating back to medieval Indian times and that they may hold information about the history of the Assam region.

He claimed that the coins may represent economic, cultural and geographical aspects of India's past, depicting maps, legends, ancient scripts and evidence of the extent of kingdoms.

According to Mr Moin, the Assam State Museum is currently working to assemble its collection of coins into a catalogue and to improve its display.

Gold coins were referred to as Mohar or Ashrafi during the Mughal reign, he said.

In more recent news, it was reported last month that government-owned companies in India are currently rewarding loyal employees with gifts of gold coins rather than cash.
