New gold mining book releasedThursday, 3rd January 2008 (3233 views) A new book detailing the rich gold mining history of the American Pacific north-west has been self-published by a US author, it has emerged.Written by Mike Impero, the book focuses on the Lone Jack gold mine in Whatcom County, Washington, part of which is still in sporadic operation today, according to the Bellingham Herald. Entitled The Lone Jack: King of the Mount Baker Mining District, the concept for the work was inspired by the 1963 book Chechaco and Sourdough, which shed light on the gold mining heritage of the Whatcom County region. Mr Impero told the newspaper that his book features stories from "a lot of colourful old-timers" - including a European murder scandal - adding that serious research into the volume took around five and a half years. "It really helped that I'm so familiar with the area. I've visited every spot mentioned in my book," he said. The Lone Jack Mine first came into operation in 1898, with additional patented claims added to the mining property around 1940.
