Gold coin recovered from historic submarineWednesday, 2nd January 2008 (2134 views) A gold coin is among the items recovered from a recovered US Confederate submarine, according to the Charleston Post and Courier.The South Carolina newspaper reported that the coin was carried by Lieutenant George Dixon, commander of the HL Hunley. Scientists at North Charleston's Warren Lasch Conservation Centre are currently working to save a number of artefacts found onboard the submarine, which was the first craft of its kind in history to sink an enemy ship. Also included among the salvaged artefacts are a number of pocketknives, a silk bandana, an assortment of tools and an oilcan containing oil dating back to the 19th century. The submarine itself is currently undergoing a multi-year restoration process at Clemson University, following its recovery in 2000. It mysteriously sunk on February 17th 1864 according to Friends of the Hunley, a non-profit group working to solve the mystery of one of the world's earliest military submarines.
